Captains Day
This year, the honours fell to captain Wally Roode to host the event, and say a few words about the society, its members, and to recall some of the memories from the year just past. He took his opportunity during the prize giving dinner to thank everybody for their contribution to the development of the society throughout the year. He particularly noted the success of our training and development program, and wryly noted that Joe Lonergan is the most improved golfer in the society, a force to be reckoned with in the future.
The 2012 Order of merit was also decided in Castleknockt. Adrian Canny was favourite at the start of the day, being two full points clear of the field. However, he did not consolidate on his grand total of 123 points. P. O’Rahilly made a late charge on the back nine, scoring 21 points for a grand total of 119 points, just shy of the standard set by young Adrian. However, Wally Roode, winner of the 2009 & 2010 Order of Merit, put together a magnificent five over par (gross) back nine, amassing 25 points, 41 points for the day, leaving him with a grand total of 125 points. This meant he finished two ahead of Adrian, winning the Order of Merit for the third time in four years.
There was an excellent attendance. Six members played golf. J. Murray and O. Kyne were absent due to injury. Last years captain Ian Corr attended the dinner. He was joined by Pat O’Donovan from The Hermitage G.C. Pat has been one of our loyal supporters for many years, and we were delighted he could attend the dinner.

Results from The Hermitage G.C. 18 Hole Competition
October 18th, 2012
You will recall the night of October 16th, and October 17th being wet, windy and horrible. There was much doubt whether we would be able to play on the 18th, in that the course would be waterlogged and closed. However, The Hermitage drains well, and we did play albeit with winter rules, lifting and placing through the green, and playing to temporary greens. The quality of scoring was high. All players returned excellent scores. This might be due to the fact that the end of the season is imminent, and golfers are making a big effort to chase down the Order of Merit. The annual Order of Merit recognises the golfer of the year, and is based on a players three best scores throughout the year plus bonus points for participation.
Peter Gorey played to his handicap, shooting 36 points. He lamented a sloppy triple bogey at the 17th, which cost him best score of the day. Adrian Canny, Peters playing partner shot a magnificent 80 gross to compile 37 points and consolidate his position at the head of the Order of Merit, with one event to go. Paul O’Rahilly started well scoring 22 points on the outward nine, but faltered over the closing holes. If he had not inadvertently signed for 31 points, his actual score of 41 points would have moved him into contention for the big prize, to be decided in Castleknock on November 5th.
We would like to thank Pat O’Donovan and Ian Corr for organising the day and inviting us to The Hermitage. This is our tenth year as guests of the club, and we always look forward to taking on the challenge of this golf course.
Results:A. Canny (10), 37 points, P.Gorey (17) 36 points, A. Downey (33) 32 points, P. O’Rahilly (30) 31 points.
Order of Merit (points): A. Canny (123), W. Roode (120), P. O’Rahilly (114), A. Downey (106), P. Gorey (73)
THE CASE OF THE
FLYING 6 IRON
A report of a 6 iron airborn at the 9th hole of Castleknock
on the 24th Sept. has been adjudged to be not against any rules of golf as Paul O'Rahilly explaines "It was the rains fault
It just took off and into the lake" Jimmy( his guide) said all I saw WAS A GLUB GOING INTO THE LAKE
This tale does have a happy ending as the golf club will retrive his club for him. " so keep a strong grip on your clubs in the rain" says Paul.
Aido the Eagle!
A rare bird was spotted in Westmanstown last Monday. Adrian Downey scored an eagle on the 11th hole. He sunk a 9-iron shot from 100 yards. His guide, Gus Sealy described the shot. Gus said “the ball landed short of the green, bounced forward, spinning to the left. It hit the flag dead centre, and dropped into the hole”. When Gus told Adrian that the ball had gone “in”, Adrian initially thought he meant it had gone into the water hazard in front of the green. This is Adrian’s first eagle in over ten years playing golf. It is the first eagle ever scored in an I.B.G.S event in its 21 year history.
Willem Roode was the winner on the day, with a score of 36 points. Wally is having a busy week, preparing for a family trip to the Paralympics in London, where his wife Catherine is competing in the cycling.
Adrian Canny, now playing off a handicap of 10, negotiated his way around the course, shooting 84 gross.
The 2012 Order of Merit is very finely balanced. Adrian Canny and Willm Roode are within one point with two events remaining. Paul O’Rahilly and Adrian Downey are lurking in third and fourth place, but may not have the form this year to catch the leaders.
We would like to thank the folks at Westmanstown for the opportunity to play. Westmanstown Golf Club has been a friend to I.B.G.S for over ten years, and actively supports golfers with disabilities.
Results’ . Roode (25) 36 points, A. Canny (10), 33 points, P. O’Rahilly (29) 28 points, A. Downey (33) 24 points J. Lonergan (45) 11 points.
Order of Merit (points): A. Canny (121), W. Roode (120), P.O’Rahilly (105), A. Downey (98).
