Christy O'Connor jnr - A Tribute
It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the untimely death of Christy O'Connor Jnr Patron of the IBGS. The use of expressions such as legend, icon, etc. seems inadequate when attempting to describe the inimitable Galway man. Christy Jnr was patron of the IBGS since 2010 and our esteemed former secretary Paul O'Rahilly has told me that he was invited to be our patron after the Irish Senior Open of 2010 which was sponsored by Dr Handa.
Paul O'Rahilly and Michael Gardiner were invited to play at Carton House in the Pro-Am and Adrian Canney's parents later played a role in Christy Jnr being invited to be one of our patrons.
A Gregarious Force Of Nature
Christy Jnr's exploits and achievements have been well documented elsewhere suffice it to say here that he has left a lasting legacy. A person that I spoke to today described the amiable Knocknacarra man as a "gregarious force of nature". His 2 iron from 235 yds. over the water to the 18th green to defeat Fred Couples so retaining the Ryder Cup for Europe was Christy jnr's greatest ever golf shot. The Belfry will never see it’s like again. We played the Celtic Cup v Scotland at Lee Valley which was designed by him. Roganstown GC which hosted the so successful Irish Blind Golf Open of 2014 was another design of Christy Jnr. We offer our sincere and deepest condolences to his wife Ann and family.
Ar dheis lamh De go raibh a anam dilis.
Ed Maguire Captain IBGS on behalf of all of our members.
We just received the sad news that Brian McLeod passed away.
Brian travelled to Ireland in 2014 to participate in the
Irish and British Blind Golf Opens.
He was a board member of the IBGA for many years, and travelled
throughout Canada promoting blind golf.
He organized the World Championships in his town of Truro Nova Scotia
in 2012. Brian was well known and respected in his home town as a golfer
and a good guy.
May he rest in peace.

NOVEMBER OUTING
ROYAL DUBLIN GOLF CLUB
Hello everybody,
Apologies for the slightly delayed blog this week.
Royal Dublin proved to be a wonderful end to our golfing year. Can't wait for the 2016 season to begin and let's hope it matches and surpasses 2015.
Roode Rules the Roost at Royal Dublin
Yes the incomparable Willem Wally Roode proved that when it comes to the ancient game of golf, form is temporary but class is permanent. The numbers were reconfigured in the week before the main event leaving Willem on 167 pts.
Ed 166 and Patrick Jnr on 165. But it made no difference whatsoever because the Sth African champion tore the course to shreds with an awesome 40 stapleford points leaving Ed and Patrick in his slip stream. I was reminded of a famous quote by Ron Atkinson when he was Man Utd manager, "We were beaten 2-0 and we were lucky to get nil". Well I have to confess that I felt like Ron Atkinson as I struggled to keep up with the Swords sorcerer, especially on the back 9.
Cometh the Hour Cometh the Man
When it came to the crunch Willem scored 22 stapleford points into the wind on the back nine, thus overturning a 7 shot deficit to prevail by 5 full points. And he seems to love courses with "Royal" in the title having previously prevailed at the Royal Johannesburg course. In all the excitement it would have been easy to forget the return to form of the Clondalkin tornado Adrian Downey. The legendary former Dublin hurling star returned a staggering 34 stapleford points to catapult himself into 4th place in the order of merit championship. I believe that Jimmy Murray had a huge number of points on the front nine.
Bond Such A Popular Winner
I have rarely seen such an ovation as that which greeted the announcement of Philip Bond as the winner of the most improved golfer award. The Ardrahan crooner has encountered and conquered so many difficulties that this award had a really special meaning for himself and for his charming wife Kathleen. I overheard somebody remark "Bend it like Bond", and indeed Philip has an incredible knack for drawing and fading shots, especially on par threes.
Cead mile Failte Paddy O Higgins, Ian Corr
and Tommy Reidy
What a pleasure it was to meet these wonderful gentlemen again. They also honored us with their presence at Royal Tara. Tommy Reidy proved to be a very amiable guest and the Northern Ireland captain was not found wanting on the fairways either. Paddy and Ian have both become synonymous with all that is good in our society and have been incredibly supportive over the years.
Our Guides- Where Would We Be Without Them?
Where indeed. I know where I'd be, in the water, in the bunker, in the trees, out of bounds, walking into trees to mention just a few mishaps. Our guides are the life blood of our society and it must be a really tough job. Anyway on behalf of all of us thank you very much. You're all fantastic......................
Thank you very much.
Eamonn McGee (Wally),
Jimmy Doyle + Pat Cockburn (Adrian),
John Kennedy + Joe O Reilly(Paul),
Pat Morgan (Patrick Jnr),
Dinny + Andy Lonergan (Joe),
Gus Sealey (Jimmy),
Pat O'Grady (John),
Gary + David Cullen + Jimmy Mason (Carol),
Oliver Canney (Peter),
Kathleen Bond (Philip)
Paul Greevy (Ed).
And last but definitely not least our esteemed PGA Coach
John Langan for his major contribution.
End of Year Report
Yes indeed it's like being back at school but I promise not to give you an E or an F or any extra homework. A former geography teacher that I once knew filled out a Xmas report for one of his students who had achieved 4% in Geography, and he wrote in the "Remarks" section of the report form, "When it comes to geography this boy does well to find his way home". All hell broke loose afterwards.
There have been so many highlights and I'll probably miss a few but here goes anyway and not in any particular order.
* Jimmy Murray's incredible victory on captain's day at Royal Tara
* Willem Roode's equally incredible comeback at Royal Dublin, to clinch the Order of Merit Title.
* Davey Lonergan's Wellies and The Duke Of Wellingtons moment.
* Philip Bond's par 3 birdie at Westmanstown and his fantastic Most Improved Golfer Award.
* John O Grady's back 9 award at Royal Tara.
* Paul O Rahilly, rolling back the year's at Gowran Park, where the former British Masters Champion, shot an incredible 41 points.
* Patrick Morgan's various achievements especially at the British Open where he was featured on BBC TV (Can I have your autograph Patrick?)
* Carol Brill's winning performance at Royal Tara and her Pat Kenny Show feature, RTE News feature with
John Langan and her speaking tour of America.
* Adrian Downey's 34 points at Royal Dublin which featured a fabulous 3 wood display.
* Joe Lonergan's continued improvement, hard to beat the Tipp lads.
* Pater Gorey's starting the Blind Golfers Choir and his consistency on the golf course.
* Jimmy Murry's unbelievable 59 foot putt at Gowran.
* Patrick Jnr’s par 3 birdie at Royal Dublin and I believe himself and his dad enjoyed the 900 euros. (sorry I could have the wrong amount)
I'm sure I've left out loads but,

OCTOBER OUTING
HERMITAGE GOLF CLUB
Hello everybody,
Just a very brief blog on this occasion especially to highlight the remarkable score achieved by one of our members at our last outing.
Comeback Kid Hits the Heights at Hermitage
Yes indeed our very own Patrick Morgan Jnr, put on an outstanding display to absolutely run away with the IBGS Hermitage Classic. The 44 points achieved by the amiable 19 year old is certainly the highest score since I became a member of the society. We may have to invent a separate competition for Patrick Jnr. Mind you his uncanny resemblance to a certain Jordan Spieth has not gone unnoticed.
The Duke of Wellington's Return
Napoleon Bonaparte shocked the world when he escaped from the island of Elba after being banished there. Well Davey Lonergan had a similar effect when he made his grand entrance at Hermitage wearing his at this stage iconic wellingtons. I mentioned in a previous blog that Nike were leading the chase to sponsor Davey's wellingtons but my "mole near the hole" has whispered to me that Adidas and Kartel have now joined the chase. It's only a matter of time before the Mullinahone maestro is on the Late Late Show.
Mighty Order of Merit Battle
The rude good health of our association is borne out by the ever increasing standards of golf and no more so than by the battle royal that is our Order of Merit Competition. And "battle royal" is an appropriate description because our final competition for the year will be at Royal Dublin this Thursday Nov 12th. And what a day it promises to be. It will be like the gun fight at the OK Corral with Ed on 169, Wally on 167 and Patrick Jnr on 165. And if any of that three screw up or lose the run of themselves Adrian Jimmy and Paul form a posse of pursuers that will be ready to step in if they get the chance. The heartening thing about the year is the giant strides being made also by Joe, Carol, Philip, Peter and John. The destination of the "the most improved golfer award" is awaited with interest. Roll on Thursday.
Irish Independent Golf Notes
We are grateful to Karl McGinty of the Irish Independent, who regularly features our results and fixtures on his Golf Notes in that paper and also the other print and radio outlets who have carried results and stories about our competitions.
New Members always Welcome
I'm told that we have at least three new members starting with us in the New Year. They will get a cead mile failte from all of us because new membership is the life blood of any organization.
My Mole Near The Hole
You know that darned mole has been extremely busy all year long. He rarely misses a trick. He tells me that a certain Angie Morgan stole the show at a recent Mansion House gathering that included the Mayor of Dublin Criona Ni Dhalaigh. Angie spoke passionately about the North Dublin Care Ass. and the great work that they do. Her speech was very warmly received. Well done to Angie who is the proud mother of Patrick Jnr. and married to Pat. What a family
Our Great Guides
I'd like to finish up by praising our wonderful guides. My wife Joan tells me that she woke up one night and heard me saying "Paul is there just a tiny bit of break to the left on this putt". Without our wonderful guides we would indeed be a sorry bunch. They contribute so much to make ours such a good organization not just advice but great encouragement.
Gura mile mile maith agaibh.

Hello everybody.
Welcome Home
The Irish Armada in Spain
12 of our members have just returned from a Spanish golfing trip. I'm assured that it was a great success. My Spies in Spain have been in constant touch and have filled me in on the trip. Miraflores GC and Calanova GC proved to be very popular destinations while El Chapparrall was very unpopular. My "Mole Near the Hole" at Calanova GC was very quickly on the phone to me. Francisco said "There was man with us today. He complejo loco. He drive the buggy like him Louis Hamilton. We think he go in lake but we not so lucky. I think his name it is Adrian. Please Eduardo you let me know when Adrian come to Spain again so I can go to Malta".
Standing Ovation For Carol
It was Neil Sedaka that penned and recorded "Oh Carol", and Carol Brill had to return early from Spain to address an A.I.B corporate group in Dublin. Well Carol did not sing but my "mole near the hole" tells me that the intrepid lady got a sustained standing ovation from her audience.
Fr Brendan McHale
Just a quick look back to Royal Tara and in particular to a most unusual occurrence. An old friend of mine from school in Mayo Fr Brendan McHale arrived into the Captains dinner and came over and handed me a sum of money as a donation to the I.B.G.S. He told me that the money was being donated to us by the Korean-Irish Society, because they "admired the work of the I.B.G.S". On behalf of the I.B.G.S thank you very much Fr Brendan.
Condolences Sr Majella Langan R.I.P
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Sr Majella Langan. Sr Majella had been attached to the Loreto Convent Carrickmacross but had been in Dealgan Nursing Home for some time. She was the sister of Joe Langan whose son John Langan has become such an important part of the I.B.G.S. Joan and myself attended at the funeral and passed on our condolences on behalf of the society. John Langan was attending a PGA course in America.

Hello everybody.
Apologies for lateness of blog. Hope you are all keeping well.
Go Raibh Mile maith agaibh
It has been a difficult few weeks for myself and I want to thank all of you for getting in touch and for your good wishes. It's only when you’re going through a rough patch that you feel the full value of genuine friendship. Thank you all again and I hope to see you all at Hermitage but not in a playing capacity.
The Italian Job
And what a trip it proved to be with a total of 14 (2 from N.I.B.G) Irish players bravely going where very few have ventured before. The course was tough and the socializing was even tougher but they say "you'll never beat the Irish" and so it proved in Milan. All of our golfers played really well with pride of place deservedly going to the "Comeback kid" Patrick Morgan who shot a net 143 over the two days. Philip Bond Carol brill Adrian Downey and Paul O Rahilly played significantly better on the final day. Your captain prevailed in the B2 category in what was a very uncompetitive section.

CAPTAINS DAY
AT
ROYAL TARA
Hello everybody,
Hope you have all fully recovered from your exertions at Royal Tara GC last Friday. It certainly was a day to remember
Go raibh Mile Maith Agaibh
I'd like to thank you all for coming to Navan to support my captain's day on a course that done full justice to the occasion. And what a day it proved to be with some wonderful golf and some excellent scoring. Royal Tara was presented in tip top condition and with excellent fairways and challenging but fair greens.
Thank You John Byrne
Yes indeed we owe a great dept. of gratitude to Royal Tara professional John Byrne who facilitated us and who was such a wonderful host. I'd also like to thank on our behalves, Captain Ray and lady captain Marie for honoring us with their presence and good company at our dinner. Such lovely people.
Our Wonderful Winners
1. Winner of the Captain's prize the cool cat from Kilkenny Jimmy Murray.
2. In 2nd place... Willem Wally Roode
3. Longest drive winner Philip Bond
4. Nearest the pin par 3 Tommy Reidy N.I.B.G.S
5. Front 9..."The Comeback Kid" Patrick Morgan jnr.
6. Back 9.... Carol Brill
The smile on Jimmy Murray's face was something to behold as he received his Newgrange Crystal first prize. I'd say he floated all the way back to the banks of the river Nore. What can you say about Wally Roode winner of the Sth. African Open last week and now a fab 2nd at Royal Tara. What a great ambassador he is for the I.B.G.S. I was told that Philip Bond's drive at Hole 10 travelled 207 yards. No bother to the mighty Ardrahan crooner. Patrick Jnr was only beaten on a countback for 2nd place and more anon about Tommy and Carol
Reidy and Brill
Yes I know it sounds like Cagney and Lacey or something but what displays they put on. The N.I.B.G.S captain honored us with his presence and put on a great display of golf. Carol Brill must be one of the fastest improving golfers that we have, mind you she nearly gave her guide Garry David Cullen a heart attack with two of the putts that she made which both travelled like the speed of light into the holes. Definitely a top three finish prospect for Italy.
Forsa Italia
Milan and the Barlassina GC beckons for Carol, Adrian, Philip, Paul, Patrick Jnr and myself and our loyal guides next Mon Oct 5th. It's going to be an epic adventure for all of us and believe me when I tell you that my "mole near the hole" will be keeping a stern eye on all of them. All misdemeanors and indiscretions will be fully reported in our next blog. (ha,ha)
My Mole Near The Hole
What I'm about to disclose is hush hush for the moment but the singing displays of Philip Bond and the bould Adrian Downey has not gone unnoticed because my ever loyal "mole near the hole" has told me in the strictest confidence of course that they may both be invited back to Royal Tara for an upcoming club music night.
Time to say goodbye and good golfing.
Regards,
Ed Maguire

Hello everybody,
Just a brief blog to bring you all up to date on what's happening and some fantastic news from South Africa.
Roode Reaches the Top in Johannesburg
Yes indeed super news from the South African Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC where Willem Wally Roode came 2nd in the overall but was victorious in the B3 category with a fantastic 201 gross. Garrett Slattery who won B2 at the Irish Open pipped Willem for the overall but an amazing 42 shots on the final 9 holes propelled the Swords based magician to an incredible B3 victory on the 2nd day. Willem drew great inspiration over the last 9 holes when his sister arrived and walked those final crucial holes with him. This success has firmly established Willem in the World's top 5 and he will receive a hero’s welcome when he tees it up on captain's day at Royal Tara GC.
Captain's Day on Sept 25th
Yes Captain's day is nearly upon us and what a day it promises to be. It has been a great honor for me to be in the captain's role for the past year and I have really enjoyed the experience. If any of you would like to check the course out in advance go to Royal Tara.ie. Suffice to say that it may be to your advantage to bring a saw with you to deal with the enormous number of trees that you will encounter. But it is a true championship course and I know that you will all enjoy the challenge.
Day Times and Menu
The 25th is of course a Friday and our tee times start at 11.00am. Royal Tara are kindly affording us free golf with no charges of any kind. Dinner will be at 6.00pm at a cost of 22 euro per person. I am including a copy of our menu for the day.
1. Starter:
Cream of Vegetable Soup
2. Main Course:
Roast prime of Beef - or
Grilled Fillet of Salmon - or
Supreme of Chicken - Smokey Rasher - Mozzarella Cheese and Tarragon Cream Sauce.
Plus selection of Vegetables and Potatoes
3. Choice of dessert
4. Tea/Coffee
The Prizes
There will be prizes for 1st and 2nd and there will also be prizes for 1st nine - 2nd nine - nearest the pin on par 3 and longest drive on a par 5.
Cead Mile Failte Tommy Reidy
Delighted to learn that Northern Ireland Blind Golf capain the affable Tommy Reidy has accepted our invitation to play at Royal Tara. Tommy is no slouch when it comes to winning golf tournaments having already won the stapleford at the British Open by a substantial margin. Anyway we will extend him a really warm welcome.
My Mole Near the Hole
Yes my "mole near the hole" has been extremely busy indeed over the past few weeks, and tells me that 4 of our stellar members have been seen traversing the fairways of Royal Tara GC. Yes indeed the irrepressible Adrian Downey Jim Doyle Patrick Snr and Patrick jnr Morgan were observed in the company of a "mysterious Mayoman" they prepared for the big day on September 25th. Their odds have consequently been greatly reduced for captain's day. However as Willem Roode obviously enjoys playing on Royal courses having just won at Royal Johannesburg GC, we hereby install him as short odds favorite for Royal Tara GC.
PS. I have just opened a book of condolences for the Mayo footballers and Galway hurlers. And finally congrats and well done to Jimmy Murray Paul O Rahilly and the Kilkenny hurlers.
Until I see you all at Royal Tara,

ROODE DEFENDS SOUTH AFRICAN TITLE
As September comes around again Wally Roode will travel to South Africa to defend his B3 title won at last years South African Blind Golf Open Championships, which will be held from 13th --15 th of this month at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.
We take this opportunity to wish Wally well regardless of the result and also a safe journey there and back. As the only Irish Representative he will show how far Irish blind golf has progressed over the years.
We also will be represented in October by 6 players competing in the
Italian Blind Open.
A full report results and photos will appear on this site as they become available.

GOWRAN GOLF CLUB
OUTING 7 TH AUGUST
Hello everybody,
Hope you have all recovered from your "exertions" at Gowran Park GC. And what a beautiful setting and wonderful layout the course proved to be. There was some super scoring and we were rewarded with our biggest turnout of the year.
It's Horses for Course as O Rahilly Triumphs at Gowran
(This item supplied to Kilkenny print media)
Last Friday was a pivotal day in the Blind golfers season as Kilkenny's native son
Paul O'Rahilly recorded a stunning back nine to prevail over South African Open champion Willem "Wally" Roode. Both gladiators returned scores of 40 points but the Kilkenny cat triumphed on countback. The amiable O’Rahilly's success was well deserved. It was definitely "horses for courses" (forgive the pun) as the Gowran Park member tore the formbook to shreds as he led the field a merry chase.
Order of Merit Title Beckons
O’Rahilly's odds of scooping this year's order of merit title have shortened considerably based on this confident display. His guide Tullaroan's legendary john Kennedy was a calming influence on a day of high drama. But O’Rahilly was not the only Kilkenny man to hit the heights as founder member of the IBGS. the smiling Jimmy Murray was resolute and determined as he recorded a highly creditable 5th place finish. Next stop for the IBGS golfers will be captain's day at Royal Tara GC in County Meath on Fri Sept 25th but all were agreed that it would be neigh (sorry nigh) impossible to better the wonderful setting that is Gowran Park GC and the equally wonderful welcome that was extended to ll of us.
Jimmy's Two Putts of The Season
Mention has to be made of the two incredible putts made by Jimmy Murray at Gowran one from 40 feet and at the last hole from 59 feet and 11 inches. Jimmy insists that he meant both of them but mind you the first putt hung for 8 full seconds before it said "sure I might as well fall into the hole or Jimmy will never forgive me".
My Mole Near Hole
Yes indeed my mole near the hole has been extremely busy over the past few days. Had a call from Paco Millan pro at the Golf del Sur course in Tenerife and he said "Eduardo do you know man from Dubleen I think he Pat O’Morgan and him son Pat O’Morgan who not so old. They practice so much on the golf coursa. I told Paco that they might be members of the IBGS. Anyway Pat Patrick and family and friends hope you have a great time and come back well tanned after your warm weather training.
My Mole Near The Hole 2
Rumours abound about the possibility of an All Ireland golf C'ship which would include golfers from the North of Ireland and members of the IBGS. My mole near the hole tells me that meetings will take place to establish the interest in such a competition.
Peter Gorey "The man for all seasons"
What a remarkable man our Uachtaran is, a super golfer multi-instrumentalist and well able to carry a note. Peter tells us that there will be a meeting on Saturday Sept 5th to further the purpose of a choir for IBGS members and others who are visually impaired. This will be a great outlet, super singers such as Adrian Downey Philip Bond and other members who can hold a note. The Late Late Show beckons.
Failte Arais Carol
And finally it's a cead mile failte arais for our very own Carol Bril who has just returned from a very productive tour of North America where she addressed audiences in places as far apart as New York Washington and New Orleans. Carol also performed heroically at Gowran Park. And a 2nd finally what's going to stop the ascent of Joe Lonergan who continues to improve at every outing. Until the next time...............

ISPS HANDA BRITISH BLIND OPEN 2015
26 th july - 29 th july
Hello everybody,
A very chastened Team Ireland captain just back from what proved to be a very challenging British Blind Open at the Montgomerie Course, Kinross, Edinburgh.
The Comeback Kid Strikes Again
It may have been a very difficult tournament for the Irish golfers just as it was for 90% of the other competitors but cometh the hour cometh the man or in this case Ireland's "comeback kid" Patrick Morgan Jnr. Patrick defied the course and the elements to record sensational rounds of 70 and 74 and 5th place in the general classification. Patrick's heroics featured on BBC Alba and BBC Radio Scotland where he was described as "the Irish Kid with the big heart". Willem Roode's superb first round 70 was compromised by a poor 2nd day showing while Ed Maguire struggled to an 11 place finish. Adrian Downey and Paul
O'Rahilly tried their hearts out on what proved to be a beast of a course (more about that later).
Northern Ireland "Punch Above Their Weight"
Congratulations to Tommy Reidy and Jan Dinsdale on their fantastic success. The Northern Ireland association may be a very small one but they really punch above their weight on the international scene. This is particularly true in the case of their popular captain Tommy Reidy who put some recent poor form behind him to claim the stapleford competition. Well done to Jan and Tommy.
Robin Clayden's Message
Congratulations are due to all those who helped to make the British Blind Open such a success especially Scotland's Robin Clayden. The hotel was very good and the food was top class. We were looked after really well. We all received an email from Robin part of which bemoaned the fact that the rounds of golf took up to nearly six hours. I have some observations on this which I would like to share. No 1. I believe that the Texas Scramble on Monday was ill advised. It gave everybody a false sense of security about the course because nobody had to play from bunkers or worry about water hazards or out of bounds. I believe that a practice round would have been more helpful and better preparation. No 2. We were playing on a course with 76 bunkers many of which were as hard as a rock. No 3. I have been told that there were water hazards on 8 holes with 16 water hazards in all. 76 bunkers and so many water hazards is too much to ask of blind golfers in a strokeplay competition. I'm not surprised that it took so long. I know that the course had to be closed on Thursday due to the amount of damage caused.
The Social Side of Things
As usual "you'll never beat the Irish" especially when it comes to the social side of things. Our entire team distinguished themselves on several fronts whether drinking "minerals" in the bar or storytelling (take a bow Jim Doyle). King of the one liners Eamonn McGee regaled everybody with his witty observations. However the undoubted star of the final night was Clondalkin's finest and former Dublin hurling stalwart Adrian Downey. The "Ardrahan Crooner" Philip Bond has an able accomplice in the former hurling legend who delighted everybody with his dulcet tones. Perry Como Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra are some of the names that come to mind when discussing the bould Adrian. Of course our uachtaran Peter Gorey has also distinguished himself, in the musical field and our esteemed guide Paul Greevy brought the house down with his rendition of The Kinks, "Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon".
My Mole Near The Hole
Yes my mole near the hole has been busy again and tells me that a fully refreshed Philip Bond is back from his warm weather training in Portugal and is ready to defend his title as king of the par 3s at Gowran Park this Friday. So until then slan agus beannacht.

My Mole Near The Hole
Yes my mole near the hole has been busy again and tells me that a fully refreshed Philip Bond is back from his warm weather training in Portugal and is ready to defend his title as king of the par 3s at Gowran Park this Friday. So until then slan agus beannacht.

PORTARLINGTON GOLF CLUB
OUTING 17 TH JULY
Hello everybody,
Hope you have all fully recovered from your exertions at beautiful Portarlington GC. What a good test of golf it proved to be,in fact too good a test for some of us. Nevertheless we live to fight another day.
Roode Rules the Roost
Yes indeed Willem "The Conqueror" Roode ruled the roost at wind swept Portarlington and showed us once again why he is one of the top rated golfers in the blind golfing world. The Sth African champion and World rated No 5 gave a display of iron play that would challenge Zach Johnson at his best. The "Comeback Kid" Patrick Morgan Jnr. was pipped at the post by just a single point despite carding a very creditable 35 points. Kudos also to Joe Lonergan whose consistency propelled him to 3rd place on the day. Well done Joe.
The Duke Of Wellingtons
No we're not talking about yer man that spanked Napoleon at Waterloo but our very own Davey Lonergan whose colourful wellingtons stole the show at Portarlington. The bould Davey was a sight to behold as he bestrode the fairways in his colourful wellies. And here's the thing perhaps Tiger Woods should borrow Davey's wellies and it might get him back into the World loyal top 50 again. When contacted during the week,The Mullinahone Maestro would neither confirm nor deny that Nike have offered him zillions of dollars to let them sponsor his wellies
Irish Invasion of Scotland
Yes the moment in history has arrived and 5 brave warriors and their equally brave guides are about to storm the beaches and barricades of Scotland in quest of the holy grail The British Blind Golf Open. Forget about Bannockburn and forget about Braveheart because Willem Roode, Patrick Morgan Jnr, Adrian Downey, Paul O'Rahilly, Ed Maguire and their loyal guides Eamonn McGee Pat Morgan Jimmy Doyle John Kennedy and Paul Greevy will be on the march on Sunday July 26 and their destination the Montgomery Course, Scotland.
My Mole Near The Hole
My "mole near the hole" has been very busy again and tells me that the "Ardrahan Crooner" Philip Bond and his charming wife Kathleen have been spotted in sunny Portugal doing some warm weather training. Philip is believed to be planning a major assault on our remaining events in preparation for the Italian Open in October.
The Legendary Jimmy Murray
What a pleasure it was to meet again the legendary Jimmy Murray at Portarlington. The Kilkenny native always seems to have a big smile on his face. In fact I believe that if the E.S.B could harness the warmth in this gentleman's big smile and warm personality they could light up half of Ireland.
And While I'm At It
I believe the irrepressible Carol Brill is on a public speaking tour of America. Nothing that Carol achieves surprises any of us. She has already starred on the Pat Kenny Show so I'm sure America is a piece of cake for her. We all look forward to her return and her next outing with us. John O'Grady continues to make great strides and hit some great golf shots at Portarlington, while my guide Paul Greevy was really impressed by the fabulous golf of the peerless Paul O'Rahilly.

STACKSTOWN GOLF CLUB
OUTING
19th. JUNE
Hello everybody,
Hope you have all fully recovered from the trials and tribulations of Stackstown.
And what a challenge it proved to be. The US Open would only be in the halfpenny place compared to it.
Adrian and Jordan Triumph
Yes the redoubtable Adrian Downey prevailed yet again and achieved his victory much the same as Jordan Spieth did in the US Open with hard work and great use of the 3 wood. The calming influence of his grandson Dan ensured that the former Dublin hurling star became the fourth different winner in our 4 outings this year. Willem Roode was the unluckiest player on the golf course having played the wrong ball twice.
There's No Show Like a Joe Show
And no we're not talking about Mullingar's legendary Joe Dolan but our very own Joe Lonergan who continues to go from strength to strength. The 24 points achieved by the Tipperary native were probably the equivalent of 34 points on a less demanding layout. The greens were like putting on a skating rink and a couple of us nearly done a Jason Day with vertigo like symptoms and I'm not speaking about the bar afterwards.
Bon Voyage Carol Bril
Yes one of our stellar new members Carol Bril is off to the States. Carol came a very creditable 5th at Stackstown and is showing great potential indeed. Apart from her golfing prowess Carol is a really cheerful vibrant personality and is great craic to be around. Hope you have an enjoyable and successful trip.
Padraig
There's only one Padraig. His is one of the most recognizable names in the entire sporting world and he has been a wonderful ambassador for Ireland and for his chosen sport. Even though the fairways were a nightmare and the greens were impossible wasn't it reassuring to see Padraig's beaming face smiling down on us all over the place. Mind you it didn't do my golf much good.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Portarlington on Friday July 17th.

IRISH BLIND GOLF CLASSIC
HOLLYWOOD LAKES
5 th JUNE 2015
Hello everybody,
Well the Blindfold Golf Classic is done and dusted and what a spectacular success it proved to be with nearly 60 intrepid golfers teeing off at Hollywood Lakes.
And take a bow Peter Gorey the man with the midas touch. Peter put a huge amount of work into the organisation and running of the competition and his efforts bore fruit with everybody enjoying a fabulous outing.
The course was in tip top condition with the wide fairways proving extremely popular.
What a Score
Willem Roode, Eamonn McGee, Joe and Colly Walsh danced jigs and reels all over Hollywood Lakes as they returned a stunning 40.75 net gross. Eamonn showed us that he's not only king of the one liners but he's also king of the fairways and Wally gave a masterclass in iron play. Oliver Cooney and his warriors must have been shocked to score 50 net gross and lose by over 9 shots but there was no disputing the brilliance of the winners on the day.
Best Wishes to Patrick Morgan Jnr
Yes the 'Comeback Kid' was sitting his Leaving Cert for the past few days and his dad assures me that all the hard work and hours of study should pay off. Anyway I'm sure you will all join me in sending best wishes to Patrick Jnr. the undoubted star of our great victory over Scotland in the Celtic Cup. However my 'mole near the hole' tells me that Adrian, Patrick Snr and Jnr, have been seen doing some extra preparation for our next outing to Stackstown GC. The handicap secretary may have to be alerted about this as I'm told the bould Adrian accumulated 37 points while Patrick Jnr had an astonishing 40 points.
Cillian A Chip off The Old Block
I was introduced to Cillian Downey (Adrian's grandson) at Hollywood Lakes. What a pleasant young man,and how delighted I was that he was able to conduct a conversation with me in fluent Irish and not a bother to him either.
Mea Culpa
I remember Paul O Rahilly saying to me after I fluked the B2 title at the Italian Open "That was one of your shorter speeches Eddie". Well I'd like to apologize to all of you for talking too much, for too long, and too often. I was so delighted to be with the blind golfers that I lost the run of myself and was too anxious to impress and so on. Well as the yanks say "enough already" you're going to have a much quieter, humbler Mayo man in your company from now on.
Hope to see you all at Stackstown GC. on Friday week.

Hello all.
Our Blindfold Classic is only 5 days away and the anticipation is building up nicely. Kudos to Peter Gorey and everybody else whose hard work has paid off once again with at least 15 teams confirmed for Hollywood Lakes on Friday.
No mean achievement in these recessionary times.
My Mole Near The Hole
Yes my "Mole Near the Hole" has been busy again and tells me that one of our esteemed members is in sunny Tenerife doing warm weather training. All shall be revealed at Hollywood Lakes.
Still lots of feedback from the Celtic Cup. Had an email from Chris Adams and the Scottish lads, who asked if they can join us on our Spanish outing
(Oct 18-23rd). It's quite an interesting development. They're still talking about the match and especially the displays of Willem Roode and
"The Comeback Kid" Patrick Morgan Jnr. whose recovery from 2 down with 2 to play was really outstanding.
The Fuss about Gus
Reflections on our outing to Westmanstown where there was some outstanding golf but where one of our excellent guides stole the show. Yes take a bow Gus Feely who had practice drives on the 17 th and 18 th. Little did Gus know that there was a fourball behind us of 4 members of An Garda Siochana who spoke to me afterwards in the car park. They were betting on how far Gus had driven the ball on the 18 th. One of them reckoned it was 310 yrds, while another had it at 305 yrds. Another said "Sure he nearly drove it into the water in front of the green". Rory McElroy would need to watch out as Gus is coming after him.
The New Kids on the Block
Great to see relative newcomers, Joe Lonergan, Carol Brill, John O Grady and the "Ardrahan Crooner" Philip King making such strides.
Joe had a super front 9 at Westmanstown, while Carol Brill played some brilliant shots (pun intended).
It was wonderful to see the progress made by John O Grady over the 18 holes and the great encouragement he got from his dad Paddy O Grady.
Philip Bond can hit the ball a long way and is still the top gun on par 3s.
We all hope that the "Galway Boy" will do a Mike Denver, and sing a song at Hollywood Lakes.
Slan Go Foill
As we said at Ballymascanlon and at Westmanstown, we owe an awful lot to our wonderful guides who look on patiently and guide us so diligently.
And our thoughts especially for one of our stalwarts the one and only
Pat Cockburn who has not been too well of late.
Pat's droll Dublin sense of humour is badly missed. I gave him the nickname,"The Midnight Man in Milan" when we were in Italy last October. Pat never went to bed before midnight, or 1 am, or 2 am, or ?.
Slan go foill and roll on Hollywood Lakes.
Do chara go deo,
Ed Maguire.

Team Ireland Retain Celtic Cup
at
Ballymascanlon GC
Heartiest congratulations to all involved in what was a wonderful Irish victory in the Celtic Cup at Ballymascanlon GC.
Team Ireland comprised Wally Roode, Patrick Morgan Jnr, Ed Maguire, Drew Cochrane, Jan Dinsdale and Sam Smith. Most of the matches were tightly contested and despite the 4 point winning margin the match was in the balance until the very end.
Willem Roode and Patrick Morgan gave Team Ireland great impetus with their fabulous victory over the top Scottish pairing with Roode's brilliant iron play and Morgan's polished short game proving the difference. Ed Maguire and Drew Cochrane kept up the good work, with Cochrane's 5 wood proving a potent weapon. Sam Smith and Jan Dinsdale were unlucky to lose their match which meant that after day one it was Team Ireland 2 Team Scotland 1.
Day 2 was the singles and they were all tightly fought. Irelands top golfer
Willem Roode won on the 18th. in what was a thrill a minute affair.
Jan Dinsdale and Drew Cochrane both came from 2 down to post brilliant victories. Ed Maguire got accross the line against a very unlucky Chris Adams while in the match of the day Patrick Morgan Jnr. came from 2 down with 2 to play to snatch the most gallant and unlikely of draws. Despite feeling unwell Sam Smith played his heart out but to no avail. That left the final score;
Team Ireland 6 1/2 Team Scotland 2 1/2.
Gura Mile Maith Agaibh
Our victory would never have happened without our wonderful guides Eamonn(Willem Roode) Paul (Ed Maguire) Pat (Patrick Morgan) David (Jan Dinsdale) Warren (Drew Cochrane) and John (Sam Smith). Our guides also scored heavily in the social scene. Particularly notable was the wonderful droll sense of humour of Eamonn whose witty one liners had the whole place in stitches.
Our Support Team
Huge credit goes to Patrick Morgan Snr. Tommy Reidy and the irrepressible Adrian Downey. The former Dublin hurling star and noted referee was a very positive presence. Huge thanks also to our great supporters our fantastic "fairway fans" Adrian and his lovely wife Maura and Philip and Kathleen Bond. Incidentally we may have unearthed a new country singing star in our secretary Philip Bond. Daniel O Donnell and Nathan Carter would need to watch their backs because the "Ardrahan Crooner" is coming after them. We'll say no more about the feeble attempt of your captain to hold a note.
The Sporting Scottish Team
Last but certainly not least. The Scottish team and their wonderful captain Iain Prime. What a lovely man and what a great bunch of lads. They were a bit unlucky to lose by 4 in the golf but they certainly lost no marks on the social side. Iain told me what his wife said about the spelling of his christian name, "Iain you have 2 i's in you name neither of which works". With that I will say "slan agus beannacht" and see you all at Westmanstown and by the way a little footnote. My "mole near the hole" told me that a certain member of our association played the first nine holes at Ballymascanlon GC. and scored 24 stapleford points, so I therefore deem Adrian Downey as a shortpriced favourite to win our Order of Merit Title this year.

Willem Roode won on the 18th. in what was a thrill a minute affair.
Jan Dinsdale and Drew Cochrane both came from 2 down to post brilliant victories. Ed Maguire got accross the line against a very unlucky Chris Adams while in the match of the day Patrick Morgan Jnr. came from 2 down with 2 to play to snatch the most gallant and unlikely of draws. Despite feeling unwell Sam Smith played his heart out but to no avail. That left the final score;
Mise do chara go deo,
Ed Maguire

appreciation
Paul
O'Rahilly has been a stalwart of the Irish Blind Golf Society for many years.
Both as a sterling competitor and a first class administrator Paul's contribution to the world of Blind Golf and Irish Blind Golf in particular has been second to none.
As a player Paul's greatest victory was when he captured the British Masters.
As an administrator his crowning achievement was the staging of the Irish Blind Golf Open in Roganstown last summer. He was also the main man behind the organising of the Celtic Cup matches in Royal Dublin and Lee Valley.
Paul has been primarily responsible for the healthy state that Irish Blind Golf now finds itself in.
He has now decided to step down from his administrative duties and he will be sorely missed.
He will continue to play and compete and we all look forward to many more rounds of golf in his company.
Thanks Paul.

In December, Eddie Maguire secured the No.l ranking in the Irish Order of Merit for Blind and Visually Impaired Golfers at the Royal Dublin Society. The rankings were decided based on 5 events over the course of the year, and Eddie, originally from Blacksod on the Erris peninsula but now resident in Navan, clinched the top spot due to his terrific form over the last 12 months. Eddie competes on the international tour for visually impaired golfers. The highlight of his sporting year came at the Italian Open at Barlassina in August, when he held off an elite international field to take the title. Eddie produced a terrific display to take the title on a score of 201 gross, a single point clear of Italian Mirko Ghiggeri in second place.
Eddie also enjoyed success on the domestic front, winning the Westmanstown competition in Dublin in September with a tremendous score of 38 points, four strokes clear of his nearest rival. He won the Stackstown competition with a count-back victory over South African Open champion Willem Roode.
Eddie has been selected as captain of both the Blind and Visually Impaired Golf Association of Ireland and the Irish International team for 2015, a fitting reward for his talent and commitment. The international team will represent Ireland in events around the world, from the US Open in Atlanta, Georgia to the Australian Open.
It's all a long way from Eddie's humble golfing beginnings, as the man himself describes. "There were only nine holes at Carne in Belmullet when I was a young gasur in Blacksod, and my little bit of golf back then was conducted around the sandy banks back in Aughleam, although truthfully we played very little as Gaelic football was our passion, and the Erris League or the 'Copa del Erris' was the be-all and end-all of our existence."
