Irish
Blind Golf Society
Results from The Royal Dublin G.C. 18 Hole Competition
November 22nd, 2013
Captains Day This year, the honours fell to Captain Wally Roode to host the event, and say a few words about the society, its members and to recall some of the memories from the year just past. He took his opportunity during the prize giving dinner to thank everybody for their contribution to the development of the society throughout the year. He introduced Michael O’Muircheartaigh as I.B.G.S. patron. Michael, who attended the dinner, took the stage and entertained the group with a short after dinner talk, looking ahead to the 2014 sporting season. Michael forecast that in 2014 Dublin would commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of The Battle of Clontarf by winning both the Sam McGuire and the Liam McCarthy cups. Wally agreed.
The 2013 Order of merit was also decided in The Royal Dublin. Adrian Downey was two shots behind Wally Roode standing on the first tee, with Adrian requiring at least 38 points to catch the leader. The front nine proved a little difficult for Adrian, returning a poor eleven points. The standard improved on the homeward nine with Adrian amassing a creditable 20 points for a total of 31. However, Wally Roode, winner of the 2009, 2010 and 2012 Order of Merit, kept in front of Adrian scoring 29 points. This left him with a grand total of 121 points. This meant he finished two ahead of Adrian, winning the Order of Merit for the third time in four years. Other guests at the dinner were Alice and Gerry Canny, parents of Adrian, who has moved to work in Toronto. Alice presented the Vision Sports Ireland shield to Patrick Morgan. Patrick who is 17 years old will compete early in 2014 for a place on the Irish Special Olympics team, travelling to California. Patrick’s speciality is level 5 golf.
There was an excellent attendance on the day. Six members played golf. J. Murray and O. Coyne rejoined us following recent extended layoffs due to injury. Past captain Ian Corr attended the dinner. He was joined by Paddy Higgins from The Royal Dublin G.C. Paddy has been one of our loyal supporters for many years, and we were delighted he could attend the dinner.
Results of Captains Prize: J. Murray (45) 35 points, A. Downey (35) 31 points, O. Coyne (45) 14 points, P. Morgan (28) 11 points.
Order of Merit (points): W. Roode (121), A. Downey (119), J. Murray (106), P. O’Rahilly (103),

Results of 2013 British Blind Golf Open
August 13th / 14th2013
Forest Pines, Lincolnshire, England
British Blind Golf Open
The annual British Blind Golf Open took place in Forest Pines Golf Club, Scunthorpe on August 13th and 14th. This event is
organised by the England
Wales Blind Golf Association, and is supported by THE International Blind Golf Association. Thirty three players from eight countries played in this years event. Playing conditions were ideal. The golf course was dry and fast following recent sunny weather. This ensured that many of the holes were in reach in regulation even for the short hitter. The only defence the course could put up were its narrow fairways and lightning fast greens.
Ireland was represented by Adrian Downey, defending the stableford title he won in last years Open. Willem Roode and Paul O’Rahilly were playing in their fourth Open.
After the first days play, Billy McAllister, a Northern Irish man now living in England, led the field scoring 67 nett. Billy is totally blind and plays in the B1 category, which means he must play with black out glasses. He is the in form player having recently lifted the British Masters, the only 72 hole strokeplay championship for blind golfers anywhere in the world. Ron Tomlinson of England, also B1, scored 69 after the first day. Also in contention at this early stage was Scotlands Ian Moncrieff and Gerry Kelly. However, lurking ominously in third place with a net 73, playing off 13 handicap was Welshman
Chris Evans.
The second day belonged to Evans. He consolidated his position with a fine 83 gross. The longer handicappers fell away, allowing Chris to win by a comfortable 6 shot margin.
Willem Roode was best of the Irish, finishing in eighth place with 164 nett. Paul O’Rahilly started well on the first day covering the early holes to his handicap. However, the tricky greens and pin positions soon brought him back
to the field. Adrian Downey, a lefty who swings the ball from right to left reported difficulty holding the tight fairways.
Next years Open will take place in Northern Ireland, to be preceded by the first Irish Open for many years. At the gala dinner, Paul O’Rahilly welcomed players to the Irish event in Roganstown Golf Club on July 2nd to 6th. He thanked the IBGA and Vision Sports Ireland for their generous sponsorship. Northern Irelands Drew Cochrane announced the British Open to take place from July 6th to the 10th.

Results of 2013 Celtic Cup on May 13 / 14th
A golf match between the blind golfers of Ireland and Scotland.
Forrester Park Golf Club, Dunfermline, Scotland.
Scotland retains the Celtic Cup
Forrester Park Golf Club hosted this year’s golf match, a Ryder Cup
style event, in association with the Westerwood Hotel, at this popular Fife
venue. Weather conditions were not
ideal. The unseasonably low temperatures combined with strong winds and heavy
showers made scoring difficult. Players and guides were observed wearing their
rain gear for warmth as well as to keep dry. Six of Scotland’s leading players
gathered to do battle. Team Ireland was made up from three players representing
Irish Blind Golf (I.B.G.S.), and three representing Northern Ireland Blind Golf (N.I.B.G.A.).
The Ireland team lost all three foursomes matches on the first days
play. The format for the day was 18 holes foursomes. None of the matches went
further than the 16th
hole, illustrating Scotland’s dominance and preparedness.
Scotland won four of the first five matches on the second day. The last
match between Drew Cochrane and Charley Forbes was declared halved on the 14th hole.
Sam Smyth and Tommy Reidy were convincingly beaten by David Patterson
and Ian Prime. Cameron MacDiarmad Scotland’s’ captain, and recent winner of the
SBGS matchplay, beat Adrian Downey on the 14th. Alan Morgan made four pars and a birdie
in the first ten holes to ease in front of Willem Roode, finally winning out on
the 16th. Paul O’Rahilly
was the only Irish man to pick up a point against Scotland’s John Imrie. Paul
hit five of the first eleven greens in regulation, to go 6 up, finally winning
on the difficult par 3, 14th.
The overall score was 7 ½ to 1 ½, in favour of Scotland.
At the Gala dinner on Tuesday evening, Ian Prime led the speeches with
an hilarious account of the events leading up to the decision to switch the
match from Westerwood to Forrester park, suggesting it was all part of a plan to
tire out the Irish team, by practicing on a boggy Westerwood, then bringing them
to another course altogether for the match
proper.
Paul O’Rahilly, captain of the Ireland team, graciously awarded the cup
to Cameron Mac Diarmad, and announced that the 2014 match will take place in
Cork, Ireland next April. Cameron congratulated the guides for their support,
commenting on the sacrifices they make volunteering to assist the blind golfers.
Results (Scotland first):
